The
much awaited “GOD Particle” has been finally discovered as the CERN scientists claim
to have found it with 99.999% certainty.
Discovering The Higgs Boson |
“The discovery of the God Particle is as significant to physics as DNA was to biology and it set a course of a new adventure to understand how the universe is built.”, said Sir Peter Knight, President of the Institute of Physics in addition to the announcement about the discovery of a new sub-atomic particle that is consistent to the expected properties of the Higgs Boson particle.
The discovery was a result of two large experiments of CERN, i.e., ATLAS and CMS- that constituted the multi-billion dollar experiment- LHC (Large Hadron Collider) at the CERN, Geneva. These 2 massive experiments saw strong indications of presence of a new particle in the mass region of 125-126 Gigaelectronvolts (GeV).

The
results which were based on the data collected in 2011 and 2012 were labeled
preliminary, with the data collected in 2012 still under expert analysis.
Actually, the ‘aha’ moment came when a video leak on Tuesday night hinted that
the new particle may have been found.
India
has done some valuable contributions towards the fulfillment of this discovery.
It was Dr. Satyendra Nath Bose who in 1924 sent a letter to Albert Einstein
describing a statistical model that eventually led to the discovery of the
Bose-Einstein condensate phenomenon. Even the the electromagnet of the Large Hadron Collider which which weighs about 8000 tons was built in India. Also many other scientists from across the
country were invited to work on this project at the CERN mainly at LHC.
This
is really a EUREKA moment.
